How To Use: MDMA Purity Test

Below you will find instructions for using the MDMA Purity Test kits.

Step 1: Knock the unopened ampoule against a hard surface several times, so the liquid will flow down and any granules which may be sticking to the inside of the ampoule will fall downwards.

Step 2: Take the top of the ampoule between the thumb and index finger, and snap off the top with the ampoule breaker.

Step 3: Use a spatula to insert the suspect material into the ampoule, then stir the mixture with the spatula for about 10 seconds. Make sure the powder does not contain any lumps ”rocks’ as this might influence the results of the test. Make sure not to leave the spatula in the ampoule because it will melt if left in the ampoule!

Step 4: Let it stand for at least 5 minutes because the color will darken slowly. Then carefully shake the ampoule for 5 seconds to make the color homogeneous. Look at the top layer of the ampoule liquid and compare the colour from the reagent granulate with the color charts below. MDMA only colors the top layer of the test so if the bottom layer gives a color this may be from an adulterant.

Step 5: Check for cross reactions, as the test also gives some reactions which may interfere with the colours. When the MDMA has been cut with some substances, other reactions may occur. Here is a list of interferes and their reactions:

SubstanceReaction
BenzocaineVery light yellow color of the bottom layer no color change on the top layer. (MDMA only colors the top layer)
BZPBright yellow top layer, gives residue on the sides of the ampoule in between the two layers. (MDMA does not give this residue)
mCPPBright yellow-orange top layer, gives residue on the sides of the ampoule in between the two layers. (MDMA does not give this residue)
MDASame reactions as MDMA
Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)Yellow top and Bottom layers (MDMA only colors the top layer)
PhenacetinYellow top and Bottom layers (MDMA only colors the top layer)
TFMPPBright yellow top layer, gives residue on the sides of the ampoule in between the two layers. (MDMA does not give this residue)

Step 6: Since these tests do not require acid neutralisers, you may throw the used ampoules in the trash or glass recycling bin.

If inconclusive or if you doubt the result, always get the suspected sample analysed by a laboratory.

Note: there might always be some variation in the colour reactions due to the composition of the compound.
